The Crutch of the Matter

When your child is injured, encourage him to carry on with his normal routine

A child on crutches can make any parent wince. When yours is injured and needs support from a wheelchair, sling or crutches, you can encourage him to carry on with his normal routine - including school - so long as his doctor agrees. Here are some ideas to help him get through it with minimal hassle.

First, notify the school and assure the staff that this is a temporary situation. Your son will be back to a regular routine as soon as possible. Meanwhile, do what you can to make it easier for him:

  • Ask for an extra set of books so they don't have to be carried back and forth
  • Recruit a buddy to open doors and help with meal trays
  • Talk to the bus driver about providing assistance getting on and off the bus
  • Remind friends and siblings that they should never adjust or play with crutches
  • Safely navigating stairs, chairs and doorways may require some practice
